Do you ever hear an old song come on the radio that brings back fond memories of your childhood? A song you hadn’t heard in many years but you remember hearing nearly every day as a child?
Well, that happened to me the other day as I was driving into town…
One of my favorite songs as a youngster was “Georgy Girl” by The Seekers, an Australian folk/pop group that was just beginning to find international success at the time.
Like most kids I didn’t really pay attention to the words of “Georgy Girl”. I just enjoyed the upbeat tempo and female lead singer Judith Durham’s incredible voice. For whatever reason, my mood always seemed to lift a bit every time that song came on the radio.
And so it was the other day when I heard it once again. It had been a long, tiring day and an ill family member had been on my mind the entire time. Simply put, I was feeling a little down.
But then, out of the blue, up pops “Georgy Girl” on my radio. And like so many times before, my mood instantly lifted as soon as that familiar beat began to fill the air.
Later that night I sat down at my computer and looked up The Seekers on YouTube. I found all of their original recordings along with several videos from their early 1990’s reunion tour – and they were all wonderful. Judith Durham never lost her beautiful voice and she was singing just as great as ever right up until her passing in August 2022.
If you’re unfamiliar with The Seekers and the golden-voiced Judith Durham, I invite you to watch this performance of “Georgy Girl” which was recorded live in Melbourne in 1967.
