The planet Mercury is too small and too far away to see with the naked eye, but you can easily see Venus with the naked eye because it’s the second brightest object in the night sky after the moon.
What’s more, if you look at Venus through an inexpensive telescope you’ll even be able to see its moon-like phases (crescent, half, or gibbous) as it orbits the sun.

This might come as a shock to the younger generation but there was a time here in U.S. when the only Volkswagen one was likely to see on the road was either a VW Beetle or a VW Microbus.
Nowadays of course there are a plethora of different Volkswagen models, but that wasn’t the case back when I was a youngster.
Those little Beetles were odd-looking and the Microbuses always seemed to catch a lot of sideways glances, but they were cute and very functional. And there were lots of them on the road. [Read more…]
Video flashback: Carson Peters debuts on the Grand Ole Opry…at just 10 years old

Like many from my local area, I had the pleasure of watching Carson Peters grow up singing and playing his trademark sizzling fiddle.
The first time I saw this young man perform was in nearby Bristol, Virginia on the stage of a local Bluegrass Music show called The Pickin’ Porch.
He was all of 8 years old, but he played that fiddle like he was already a seasoned veteran – and in a very real way, he was.
