The vast majority of things I write about here tend to be happy and uplifting (I hope so at least), but on occasion I feel the need to write about topics that deal with online security.
Well, today I’m going to discuss your physical security, a topic that’s very important in today’s dangerous world.
Most of us aren’t experts in self-defense but there are some things we can all do in order to enhance our personal security when we’re out and about amongst the public.
First and foremost is situational awareness. There is no substitute for keeping a watchful eye on the people around you and not letting yourself get caught up in a dangerous situation.
If someone in your general vicinity is acting strange or just simply gives you a bad vibe, walk away. Gut feelings are often very reliable indicators of potential danger. And as it’s often said by security experts, the best way to thwart any kind of attack is to avoid being attacked in the first place.
Another important part of personal safety is always carrying a weapon of some sort. Now I’m not necessarily talking about a firearm or a knife, although those are certainly useful as long as you are properly trained for using them and they are legal in your jurisdiction.
What I’m talking about here is something called a tactical pen. These devices look much like a regular ink pen but they are built in a way that makes them very effective at stopping an attacker (they are heavy, very sturdy and built specifically for self-defense).
Tactical pens are easy to carry and just as easy to use to thwart an attack. The key is to attack swiftly and repeatedly, keeping a solid grip on most of the barrel of the pen to prevent your attacker from taking it from you. Several hard strikes in rapid succession will bring most any attacker to his knees.
There are numerous brands and styles of tactical pens on the market these days, but I really like this one for the following reasons:
1 – Unlike most tactical pens, this one looks like a regular ink pen, which is important because it’s a lot less likely to be confiscated while going through a security checkpoint. It’s also less likely to be recognized as a weapon by an attacker.
2 – It easy fits into most any pocket, ensuring that it will be immediately accessible should you feel the need to retrieve it.
3 – It’s also an emergency glass breaker that can help you escape from a vehicle if you somehow manage to get trapped inside of one due to an an accident.
Please understand the purpose of this post isn’t to scare you or make you anxious about going out in public. It’s just the opposite.
Knowing how to protect yourself in an ever more dangerous world and having an effective tool for doing so can actually help you feel more confident and empowered. That’s my hope at least.
