As you probably know, Japan’s capitol city of Tokyo has long been recognized as the world’s largest city in terms of population.
Well, that has apparently changed according to a Newsweek story that recently caught my eye.
The title of “World’s Largest City” now belongs to Jakarta, Indonesia.
And by the way, Tokyo didn’t just lose the top spot, it now sits at #3 behind Jakarta and Dhaka, Bangladesh.
No, Tokyo didn’t just lose a bunch of its residents or Jakarta and Dhaka gain a bunch. This abrupt change in status is due to a change in the way the number crunchers at the U.N. determine a city’s population.
Now I’m no expert on geo-political things so I can’t state an opinion about the wisdom or appropriateness of the new counting method, but I’ve been thinking of Tokyo as the world’s largest city so long that it just seems unnatural that it no longer is.
Oh well, as is often said…
For better or worse, things change.
Although Tokyo is no longer ranked as the most populous city in the world, as cities go it’s still one of my favorites (I’ve been there and I really enjoyed the visit). The sights and the never-ending hustle and bustle are simply amazing.
