If you enjoy taking long road trips you’re probably familiar with America’s iconic US Route 66. And truth be told, you’ve probably heard of it even if you’re not really into traveling by car.

In its heyday this iconic two-lane highway stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago, Illinois in the American midwest to Santa Monica, California on the west coast.

The construction of the Interstate Highway System resulted in Route 66 being chopped up into alternating stretches of interstate highways and two-lane roads, but you can still drive the entire length of Route 66 today.

The short video below explains how (and why) Route 66 was built in the early 1900s and how it evolved over the better part of a century into what it is today.

By the way, this video was filmed nine years ago so Route 66 is actually pushing 100 now. Watch, and enjoy…
