You probably won’t be seeing one on the road these days but back in the 1970s it seemed like they were everywhere. During that decade the Ford Pinto was one of the top-selling cars in the country.
My brother bought a shiny brand new Pinto and drove it for several years. And later, when I finally became old enough to drive, my first car was a green, heavily-used 1973 Pinto with the left rear fender missing.
And guess what? I loved that car!
Unfortunately, production of new Pintos came to a screeching halt in 1980 because researchers had deemed the car unsafe to drive due to a poorly-placed fuel tank that could cause the car to burst into flames when rear-ended by another vehicle.
How unsafe the Pinto really was has been debated for years and I doubt if the matter will ever be settled to anyone’s satisfaction, but I loved mine and I guess I always will. After all, it was the very first car that was truly my own.
I was perusing YouTube this morning when I happened to find a humorous short video featuring several of the commercials that Ford aired in 1971, the Pinto’s very first model year. It sure brought back some great memories. Check it out and see if brings back some memories for you as well – and perhaps even a chuckle or two.
