Have you ever heard the term “Fosbury Flop”? If you aren’t into the world of “Track & Field” sports the answer is probably no.
But truth be told, this one innovation probably changed its sport more than any other in human history.
When American athlete Dick Fosbury took his odd-looking High Jump technique to the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, the spectators and other athletes laughed at him as he pulled off his first couple of wildly unique jumps.
But they soon stopped laughing after it became clear that he had taken the gold medal in the event.
Today the “Fosbury Flop” is used by virtually every athlete who participates in the High Jump. That one day in Mexico City changed the event forever.
If you’ve never seen the Fosbury Flop in action you can see it right here in this very short video from 1968. You will see history being made by Dick Fosbury as a stunned world looks on.
