If you’re like most people, hearing an old song come on the radio brings back one or more old memories.
And truth be told, those memories can be either good memories or bad memories.
The thing is, the memories you have attached to an old song will often determine whether you like that song or not.
I’m sure there are probably some old songs that leave you feeling upbeat and happy after you hear them, and others that leave you feeling a little down.
In most cases those feelings are determined by the memories the song brought to mind, not the content of the song itself.
For the most part I love hearing a classic song from my younger days come on the radio, but there are three or four songs that always prompt me to change the station as quickly as possible.
And the weird thing is, I really liked some of those “sad” songs the first few times I heard them.
But then something bad happened in my life that I first learned about while I was listening to one of those songs, and those sad events forever changed the way I feel about them.
That’s right – simply having my mind associate a certain song with a sad event causes me to forever dislike that song.
I know that sounds strange, but it’s true. And I’m thinking it’s probably true for you as well.
How about you? Are there certain songs from yesteryear that always spur memories that are strong enough to make you laugh – or cry?
