Few things in life are more frustrating than a jar lid that simply refuses to open. There are several things you can use to help break the seal and remove a stubborn lid, but I just found the best of the lot.
It’s called a JarKey and that name is actually quite fitting given the purpose it serves.
What makes many jars so difficult to open is the vacuum seal inside the jar. It works as sort of a virtual glue to keep the lid sealed tightly against the rim of the jar.
The science behind the JarKey is simple: Gently pry up on one side of the lid just enough to allow air to enter the jar and release the pressure created by the vacuum.
When I first saw an ad for this little gem I wanted to test the concept before ordering another potentially useless gadget that didn’t quite live up to its billing, so I rummaged through my toolbox looking for something that might work the same way. And I found it.
I simply took a pair of curved-nose pliers and hooked one side under the lip of the jar lid, then gently pried the lid upwards. And sure enough, I heard the tell-tale pop of the lid being released from the vacuum pressure. After that pressure was released the lid came off with very little effort.
After watching several YouTube videos showing how easy it is to use the JarKey and my own test confirming its effectiveness, I decided to go ahead and order one. My arthritic hands can’t wait for it to arrive.
