“Time is a game played beautifully by children.”
-–Heraclitus
Like most folks you probably have wonderful memories of your childhood, a time when worries were few and pleasures were many.
Running around the playground and having fun with friends, hopping on your bike and riding with the wind until the porch lights came on…not having to worry about how you’re going to pay your bills or deal with any of the troubles related to adulthood.
Childhood is a magical time when the entire world revolves around you and exists for your pleasure. It won’t always be that way of course, nor should it. But it will be that way for a few brief years.
I’m a firm believer in the need to let kids be kids, having fun and learning about life on their own schedule. Sure, the adults in their lives should do their best to guide them in the right direction (both physically and morally) and protect them from harm, but beyond that a child’s life should belong to the child.
- Kids are going to make mistakes, but they will learn valuable lessons from them.
- Kids are going to fail at some of the things they try, but that’s fine because they’ll eventually discover the things they are gifted at.
- Kids will eventually grow into adolescents and begin to expand their horizons while taking on more and more responsibility…and finally comes the transition into adulthood.
Childhood is arguably the most important chapter of a person’s life because it’s the only time in one’s life when struggles and pain are virtually non-existent.
When I reflect back on my own childhood I see a world of wonder and (mostly) day after day filled with joy. I hope it’s the same for you.
