These days we think very little about just how massively large structures are built. They just seem to go up with little effort thanks to the assistance of modern heavy machinery and their highly skilled operators.
But there was a time when designing and building immense structures was both extremely difficult and extremely dangerous. Lots of money and countless lives were lost during the building of the America that we know and love today.
One of the largest and most challenging structures ever built on American soil is California’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge. This whopping 8,981 foot bridge spans some of the world’s most dangerous water and sways in almost constant wind, creating design and construction challenges that were difficult to overcome in the 1930s. But overcome them they did and the result is one of the most world’s most beautiful and most heavily used man-made structures.
The short, but fascinating video below explains how the many difficulties this project faced were overcome with novel feats of engineering and design, all without the aid of computers.
I invite you to watch, listen and enjoy…
Pretty fascinating stuff, right?
There are so many amazing things to see and do in California that it’s impossible to see and do them all in one short trip. The next time you pay a visit to the Golden State be sure to take this along with you. (#ad)
