“Making one person smile can change the world – maybe not the whole world, but their world.” –John Spence
Based on my own life experiences, I believe one of the most powerful tools we have for building a happy life is helping others make their own lives a little better.
It’s certainly true that a person can live their entire life being concerned about no one but himself or herself, and plenty of people do. And just by looking in from the outside, most of those people don’t seem to be all that happy.
Of course when the rubber hits the road, it’s important to make sure your own needs (and the needs of your own family) are met before you turn your attention to someone else, but once your own situation is squared away maybe there’s a neighbor that could use a little help with something they are dealing with.
It doesn’t have to be anything major. Something as simple as helping them get a finicky lawnmower started or volunteering to pick up a prescription for them when they are too sick to go out themselves can help turn a bad day into a better one.
Of course there are people in this world who will gladly take advantage of your kindness and generosity so it’s surely wise to keep your guard up to prevent that from happening. It’s quite easy to get jaded when it does. But if you let that possibility deter you from helping someone who is truly in need you’ll end up missing out on an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful feeling you’ll get by putting a smile on their face.
I know many things and situations that someone might be dealing with will be beyond your control, but even when you’re unable to offer tangible assistance you can still offer a word of encouragement, a bit of moral support and a kind smile of your own. Sometimes just knowing someone cares is enough to lift a spirit that’s desperately in need of a lift.
This is the way I try to approach every new day. I don’t always succeed, but I always give it my best shot. I have a feeling you do as well.
To finish up, here’s a short video that will (hopefully) put a smile on your face! Watch, and enjoy…
I hope you enjoyed that as much as I did!
If you know someone who could use a little encouragement and some sage advice for making their life a little better, one of these might be a help to them. (#ad)
