How (and why) to use an electrical outlet tester

I frequently feature a super-handy electrical outlet tester as my Daily Tech Gadget Pick on my tech blog, but it just occurred to me that I have never explained how (or why) to use one.

In a nutshell, these devices tell you whether any of your 120V electrical outlets are wired incorrectly and are unsafe to use.

An incorrectly wired outlet can cause all kinds of problems, ranging from surge protectors that don’t work all the way up to a serious fire hazard.  [Read more…]

Life tip: How to easily carry multiple grocery bags at one time

Do you ever find yourself struggling to carry the groceries you just purchased from your car to your kitchen?

Depending on the weight of each bag and what’s inside them, it could mean making several trips while carrying just three or four bags at a time.

I eventually mastered the art of choosing the bags that could most easily be carried together, but even then my hands would be cramped and hurting by the time I made it into the kitchen.  [Read more…]
