Remembering Joe Diffie – and the song that could have been written about my own early life

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Joe Diffie sing.

It was close to midnight on a hot summer Sunday night as I was driving down a lonely stretch of I-20 between Columbia, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia.

I was stationed at Augusta’s Fort Gordon Army base at the time and I was on my way back to Augusta after spending the weekend “back home” in Virginia.

What you night not know about Marty is just how young he was when he started working as a professional musician, performing with some of the biggest stars of the day in the Country and Bluegrass genres.

Chances are you’re quite familiar with the hit song “I Will Always Love You”.

What you might not know is that song went to #1 a total of three times, on two different Billboard charts.
