“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.” — Albert Einstein
There are probably a million and one different types of legal jobs in this world, and every one of them is important.
Every action that helps build something good, enable something good or maintain something good must be performed by someone.
For example, before you can drink your morning coffee, lots of people have to do lots of jobs to get the coffee from the beans hanging on the plants (probably on a different continent) into the cup you’ll be drinking it from. Every one of those jobs is just as important as the others and every worker who performs one of them deserves respect.
The same goes for the people on a hospital cleaning crew. Their jobs are just as important as the doctors that treat our ailments.
This isn’t to say someone mopping the floors should earn the same amount as the doctors. That would be absurd. But their job is just as important when it comes to running a clean and safe medical facility.
It really bothers me when I see another customer talking down to a cashier, a server or anyone else who is just trying to do their job and earn a living for their family. And unfortunately I see it far too often, including during today’s visit to my local grocery store.
Yes, I too get a little frustrated when someone does a poor job and it inconveniences me in some way. I’m only human after all. But I always try my best to simply get on with my day after the issue at hand has been resolved.
Every person we encounter throughout the day is dealing with something that we will never know about, and all of us make mistakes of our own. I believe it pays to show folks a little kindness and understanding whenever possible.
I believe it’s also important to show respect to the people who do the jobs that make our lives safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable, regardless of how important we might consider those jobs to be.
To finish up, a while back I wrote this post explaining why I never put much trust in a first impression. Well, the short video below is yet another excellent example. Watch, and enjoy.
Speaking of respect, I believe this sign should hang on the wall of every business. (#ad)
