Imagine you’re walking through a mall, an airport or some other public place when all of a sudden you hear Boogie-Woogie music emanating from a piano.

Now imagine your surprise when you get close enough to see that the person making that music is a young boy.

Remembering Joe Diffie – and the song that could have been written about my own early life

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Joe Diffie sing.

It was close to midnight on a hot summer Sunday night as I was driving down a lonely stretch of I-20 between Columbia, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia.

I was stationed at Augusta’s Fort Gordon Army base at the time and I was on my way back to Augusta after spending the weekend “back home” in Virginia.

A while back I featured this fantastic instrumental performance of “Sultans of Swing” by Chelsea and Grace Constable, two ultra-talented sisters from nearby Kingsport, Tennessee.

Today’s video showcases the talents of these young ladies once again.

Back in September 1966 a whimsical tune from The Byrds hit the airwaves. It was titled “Mr. Spaceman” and it was quite different from most of the popular songs of the day.

In a nutshell, Mr. Spaceman is the tale of extra-terrestrial visitors paying nightly visits to the singer’s local neighborhood.

But instead of the fellow being terrified of the aliens, he asks for a ride in their spaceship. Sadly, that request isn’t granted but the song is up-beat and leaves you feeling better none-the-less.  [Read more…]

If you enjoy listening to music, you probably like a variety of different songs, for a variety of reasons.

Some songs are inspirational and uplifting.

Others tell a story that reaches through the speakers and touches you in some way.

And of course, some are just plain fun to listen to.
