A while back I shared this spectacular time-lapse video of our planet Earth at night.

The photos used to create that video were taken from the International Space Station as it made its orbit around the globe.

One of the first things we learn as youngsters is how long a day and a year is. After all, birthdays wouldn’t make much sense without this basic understanding of time. And as you surely know, kids are all about birthdays.

Here on planet Earth, one day is roughly 24 hours in length and one year is roughly 365 days.

But the lengths of the days and years on other planets are vastly different than here on Earth. And in some cases, they are mind-bogglingly different.  [Read more…]

Compared to many of our animal friends, we humans are a pretty slow bunch.

In fact, the world’s fastest human to date was clocked at well less than 30 miles per hour (MPH).

That’s less than half as fast as the fastest land animals and several times slower than the fastest birds.

But guess what? Every human being (and everything else on planet earth) is constantly moving at astounding speeds – even those who are standing still, sitting in an easy chair or lying in bed!

I’m sure you’ve probably heard astronomers use the term “Light-Year”, but do you know what that term actually means?

The use of the word “year” makes it sound like “light-year” would be used to measure time, but in reality it’s a measurement of distance.

Virtually every astronaut that has orbited our planet said the views of Earth from above were the most wonderful part of the entire experience.
