Every now and then a song will come on the radio that reminds me of my youth, and that happened yet again today.

One of the first songs I remember hearing when I was a small child is “Rhythm of the Rain” by a group called The Cascades.

Q&A: Why don’t the oceans keep getting saltier?

Question from Kelly:  In school they taught us that the earth’s rivers are constantly dumping salt into the oceans.

If that’s true why aren’t the oceans getting saltier?

It seems to me that after all these billions of years the water in the oceans should be too salty to even support sea life.

So why don’t the oceans keep getting saltier as more and more salt is carried down the rivers and deposited in the oceans? [Read more…]

Finally, French brothers Joseph-Michel Montgolfier and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier teamed up to invent the first successful hot air balloon. And years later, Orville and Wilbur Wright designed, built and flew the first successful airplane.  [Read more…]

Ever wonder why no one smiled in old photographs?

If you’ve ever looked through a stack of old photographs from the 19th and early 20th century you surely noticed something very odd…

None (or at least very few) of the people in those vintage photos were smiling.

In fact, they all looked like their dog had just eaten the winning Powerball ticket.

So what’s up with that? Was life in those times so difficult that people just didn’t feel happy enough to smile?  [Read more…]
